چکیده

Experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of sulfanilamide upon hemolytic streptococci growing within the animal body, yet protected by collodion membranes from phagocytosis. The method of manufacturing the collodion sacs used in the experiments has previously been described (Harris, 1939). Theories regarding the r6le of phagocytosis in the drug's action have been amply discussed by Long and Bliss (1939). The following experiments, of which a preliminary report has been presented (1940), were undertaken to test the prevalent hypothesis that phagocytosis is essential to the effective bactericidal action of the drug in vivo.

The Fate of a Virulent Hemolytic Streptococcus Injected into the Skin of Normal and Immunized Rabbits

1. Hemolytic streptococci, highly virulent for rabbits, when injected into the skin of normal animals increased greatly in number at the site of injection during the first 12 hours, diminished somewhat after 24 hours but still persisted after 21 days. They produced large abscesses within 24 hours, there was ulceration, and healing occurred after about 5 weeks. Histological observations confirme...

The Fate of Avirulent Hemolytic Streptococci Injected into the Skin of Normal and Sensitized Rabbits

1. A relatively avirulent strain of hemolytic streptococci injected into the skin of normal rabbits seldom diminished and usually increased in number during the first 5 hours after inoculation but after 12 hours save in exceptional instances the organisms diminished rapidly and disappeared. 2. Hemolytic streptococci injected into the skin of normal rabbits passed rapidly from the site of inject...

Separation of the Toxins of Bacillus Dysenteriæ Shiga

By the suppression, through anaerobiosis, of the exotoxin-producing activity of Bacillus dysenteriae Shiga a pure endotoxin is produced directly from the culture. The duality of the poison of Shiga bacillus is further substantiated by studies on the diffusion of exotoxin, or neurotoxin, and endotoxin, or enterotoxin, by means of collodion sacs, implanted intraabdominally in rabbits or placed in...

A Comparison of Cutaneous Sensitization and Antibody Formation in Rabbits Immunized by Intravenous or Intradermal Injections of Indifferent or Hemolytic Streptococci and Pneumococci

1. Rabbits that had received repeated intravenous injections of heat-killed indifferent streptococci with no resulting sensitization were subsequently made skin-sensitive to them by repeated intracutaneous injection of heat-killed vaccine. 2. Serum agglutinins and precipitins developed earlier in rabbits that had received repeated intravenous injections of killed streptococci and pneumococci th...
